Police respond to 'incident' at Oxford Circus Tube station

Police responded to what they believe is a "terrorist related" incident at London's Oxford Circus Tube station Friday.

British Transport police said the Oxford Circus Station was closed for an investigation into a "customer incident". "Armed and unarmed officers are on scene and dealing along with colleagues from British Transport Police", the statement said.

In a statement the Met said: "Given the nature of the information received, the Met responded in line with our existing operation as if the incident was terrorism, including the deployment of armed officers".

Those who are not in the area should avoid travelling to Oxford Street. Met police officers are urging people in the area to go into a building, or remain inside.

"They were crying, they were screaming, they were dropping their shopping bags". Local residents said heavy police presence could be seen. Many people took shelter in nearby buildings.
