Sex unlikely to cause cardiac arrest, study finds

Some potential sexual partners might promise heart-stopping sex if you slip between the sheets with them, but a new study shows that's probably not going to happen.

There's absolutely no need to worry about it, as a recent study discovered it rarely happens that a person should suffer a cardiac arrest during sex.

The majority of people who had a heart attack during sex also had a history of other heart conditions, including higher rates of ventricular fibrillation - a serious irregular heartbeat - and tachycardia, a faster-than-normal heart rate.

"People will ask their doctors if sex increases their risk of sudden death, and we've never had the answer before because there never was a study", senior study author Dr. Sumeet Chugh, said a statement from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Most of the incidents - around 94 percent - occurred in men around 60 years old on average, according to the study presented during the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions meeting California on November 12.

Only 34 cases occurred during or within an hour of engaging in sex.

In total, the scientists identified 4,557 SCAs in Portland during the 13-year study period.

It is not the same as a heart attack, in which blood flow to the heart is blocked.

But the study found that only a third of people who collapse during sex are likely to receive CPR from their partner.

Are you afraid you might have such good sex that your heart just stops beating? According to the study, the low bystander CPR rate accounted for less than 20 percent of patients who survived to hospital discharge.

Cardiac arrest involves the abrupt loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness.

One in 100 cases of cardiac arrest in men was associated with sexual activity, compared with one in 1000 cases in women.

Chugh and colleagues reported their findings at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions meeting in Anaheim, California, and online in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Almost 20 percent of the sex-related hearts attack patients survived, compared to just 12.9 percent of those whose heart attacks weren't linked to sex.

"This highlights the importance of continued efforts to educate the public on the importance of CPR, no matter the circumstance", Chugh said.
