Trump tweets NYC terror suspect 'should get the death penalty'

President Donald Trump waded deeper Thursday into the legal procedures ahead for the suspect in the New York City terrorist attack, saying he wishes he could ship him off to Guantanamo Bay and urging for the death penalty.

"Statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system", Trump said in an early morning tweet, adding that there is "also something appropriate" about keeping him "in the home of the awful crime he committed".

US President Donald Trump called for capital punishment for Manhattan terrorist Sayfullo Saipov. Trump tweeted. "There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the awful crime he committed".

On Wednesday, Trump called the United States justice system a slow-moving "joke" and "laughingstock" and said he would be open to seeing Saipov transferred to the USA prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where enemy combatants are tried by military tribunals.

At least a dozen others were injured in the truck attack in Tribeca.

The Obama administration made a similar argument in trying to move the five men accused in the September 11 attacks from Guantanamo to NY for trial in a civilian court, an effort that was derailed by political opposition.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it had located another Uzbek man, Mukhammadzoir Kadirov, 32, as a person of interest in the attack.

Saipov has also been charged with providing material support to Islamic State.

This handout photograph from the St. Charles County Department of Corrections in Missouri shows Sayfullo Saipov, the truck driver suspected of killing eight people in New York City on October 31. Saipov appeared in a NY federal courtroom on Wednesday on terrorism charges after he allegedly drove a rented pickup truck down a mile-long stretch of bike path on Tuesday in Lower Manhattan's West Side, where children and their parents were preparing to celebrate Halloween.

Mr Trump has also assailed Senator Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the Senate, who in 1990 introduced the bill in the House of Representatives that helped create the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program - despite the fact that Mr Schumer was among a bipartisan group of lawmakers in 2013 who sought to end it.

Experts also said it would be highly improbable to send Saipov to Guantanamo because a federal judge would have to agree to turn him over to a military commission, and no person has ever been sent to Guantanamo straight from U.S. soil.

On Wednesday, Trump vowed to "get rid" of the green card lottery "as soon as possible", seizing on the NY attack to press his campaign-agenda of restricting immigration. They say the Islamic State group's online calls to action spurred Saipov to launch the attack in lower Manhattan on Halloween. "We need quick justice and we need strong justice". No one held in the USA has been sent to Guantanamo since the detention center opened in January 2002.

Tuesday's assault was the deadliest in NY since the September 11, 2001, when more than 2600 people died in the World Trade Centre attack.

"Trump helped the terrorist with this tweet".

Columbia Law professor Matthew Waxman served in the Bush administration and specifically worked on Guantanamo Bay detention, and largely agreed with Vladeck that detaining Saipov would probably accomplish more harm than good.

The attack killed five people from Argentina, one from Belgium and two Americans, authorities said.
