CBS News affiliate KOIN-TVreports 27-year-old Timofey Erofeeff, of Scotts Mill, swam a couple of hundred feet into the frigid river before deciding to swim back Wednesday. Authorities were ready to take him into custody when he fled and drove down the pier and into the Columbia River, according to reports.

Moreland told Storyful residents alerted police to a man, later identified as Timofey Erofeeff, 27, that was trespassing on boats docked at North Tongue Point. He swam away from police but eventually came back.

The truck has not been recovered from the river.

Police threw the freezing man a life preserver and planned his rescue, FoxNews reported.

Erofeeff was taken to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia before being booked into the Clatsop County Jail on charges including criminal trespass, parole violation and reckless driving.
