The broader Nifty too put up a strong show by notching up gains of close to 1 percent.

The Sensex started the week higher at 33,968.02 and hovered between 33,285.68 and 32,565.16 before ending the week at 33,250.30, showing a gain of 417.36, or 1.27 percent.

ITC emerged as the leader of the Sensex pack on Friday, with a 3.44 percent rise, followed by Tata Motors at 2.21 percent.

Asian markets were trading higher following a broad-based rally in USA equities. In contrast, Hero MotoCorp, SBI, Reliance Industries, TCS, Asian Paint and Dr. Reddy's succumbed to profit-booking. "Sectorally, the top gainers were the FMCG, pharma, metal and auto indices", he added.
