The United Nations Security Council imposed tough new sanctions on Friday in response to a ballistic missile North Korea said can reach the U.S.

The ministry said that Pyongyang could also seek to improve its ties with South Korea.

The US-drafted resolution would also force all North Koreans working overseas to return within 24 months along with a ban on exports of North Korean goods.

The current limit was set in a Security Council resolution adopted in September following the North's sixth and most powerful nuclear test. China is North Korea's main source of fuel, but it has come under pressure to suspend its oil supplies to the country amid North Korean missile tests.
