Its fierce competitors, Gauteng and the Western Cape scored 85.1% and 82.7% respectively.

Gauteng took second place with 86% - a decline of 1% from 2016.

But the main opposition Democratic Alliance said the real pass rate was much lower at 37.3% if taking into account that many pupils had dropped out of school between the Grade 10 class of 2015 and those who ultimately wrote their final exams in 2017. This means that almost half of Grade 10 learners are dropping out of or getting stuck in the system - delaying their entry into post-school education and the job market, it said.

"If these provinces did not do this, some of the progressed young people, could have fallen through the cracks of the system, due to continuous repetition and ultimate drop-out from the system", Minister Motshekga said.
