O'Riordan was in England to collaborate with a Los Angeles metal band on a cover of the Cranberries song Zombie. The Cranberries achieved worldwide success in the 1990s with their debut album "Everyone Else is Doing it, So Why Can't We?" which included the hit single "Linger".

When O'Riordan finally went solo in 2006, she collaborated with many artists and wrote many songs, and even made her Hollywood debut, invited to sing in the ending scene of the Adam Sandler film Click. The band split in 2003, when O'Riordan briefly pursued a solo career, but then reunited in 2009.

Musician Jim Corr, of the Irish band The Corrs, posted on Twitter: "My deepest sympathies to the family of Dolores O'Riordan who tragically passed away today".

"It was 100 per cent based on personalities clicking", he said on Tuesday, as he remembered his friendship with the Irish singer.

"Her unique style of singing, although I found it peculiar when I heard Zombie for the first time (I must have been 13 or 14), as time went by, I started adoring her for the very "peculiarity" itself!"

Confirming her death, O Riordan's publicist said: "The lead singer with the Irish band The Cranberries was in London for a short recording session". My wife came home from the police centre where she worked yesterday and told me the news.

A wave of tributes have followed the star's death, led by President of Ireland Michael D Higgins, who hailed a musician, singer and song writer that "had an huge influence on rock and pop music in Ireland and internationally".

"We are shocked and saddened at the news of Dolores's passing, mere hours before she was to record vocals on our upcoming version of 'Zombie, '" Bad Wolves frontman Tommy Vext posted on the band's official Facebook page last night (Jan. 15).

The Cranberries are best known for the song "Zombie". Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar called her "Limerick's greatest ever rock star", and that her band "captured all of the angst that came with your teenage years". "It's the worst crime", she once said, "I just think that people who sexually abuse children get off too easy".

In 2017, The Cranberries were forced to cancel tour dates due to O'Riordan's health issues.

The star revealed previous year how she had been battling depression and mental health problems and even attempted suicide in 2013.

She hit the headlines in 2014 after pleading guilty to assaulting three police officers and a flight attendant during a flight from NY to Ireland, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder shortly afterwards. "On tour it's, like: "'room-service", she said of the comeback.
