However, the removal of Florida from the list of areas for consideration for oil and gas drilling, and not other states, is seen by governors of other states-¬and a former senior Department of the Interior official-as arbitrary and ripe for legal challenges. Here's NPR's Greg Allen.

Last week, Zinke proposed allowing offshore oil and gas drilling in almost all coastal waters of the United States. Nine of the 11 states that opposed the drilling order have gubernatorial races this year, and numerous most competitive contests for the House of Representatives will unfold in districts that touch coastline.

Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke met with Florida Gov. Rick Scott and later said, "I support the governor's position that Florida is unique and its coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver".

Earlier this week, after a short meeting with Scott at the Tallahassee airport, Zinke said he'd changed his mind. Coastal communities are prepared to fight even harder to save the Atlantic Ocean and our beloved beaches from this risky and controversial proposal just as we did before.

Health department offers free flu vaccine - while supplies last
The county, just like the rest of the state, has seen a spike in flu cases and it has overwhelmed some providers. It's still not too late to get vaccinated as the flu season extends until the end of spring.

ALLEN: Drilling for oil and gas has never been allowed off of Florida's coasts.

On Wednesday, Cooper asked Zinke for an immediate meeting on the issue. The group called the Florida withdrawal "premature" and said restricting access to the Eastern Gulf of Mexico in particular "puts hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk across the country and along the Gulf Coast". But that statement surprised some environmentalists.

But within the lease sale area off the Washington and OR coasts, the estimated recoverable oil reserves are a modest 400 million barrels of crude, according to an Interior Department document released last week.

And Florida is where Trump has a winter home in Palm Beach. Scott, who is finishing his second term as Florida governor, is expected to announce soon he's entering the race for the U.S. Senate, running against Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson. But the decision to do so will be neither durable nor fair if it comes by selectively ignoring the complaints of states in which the president does not identify a political or personal interest. Nelson spoke yesterday on the floor of the Senate.

"So my question is to Secretary Zinke, why is this OK for Florida, and not for Oregon". But on Tuesday, anticipating that exempting Florida's outer continental shelf from exploration would prompt a vigorous reaction from coastal leaders, Zinke promised to meet with governors.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) joined eight New England Democrats and an independent on Thursday to introduce legislation barring offshore drilling along the New England coast. "Where do we sign up for a waiver?"

Meanwhile, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, a Republican, told reporters in South Carolina he plans to ask the Trump administration for an exemption, calling it "a matter of serious importance". "Our tourism industry and glorious natural resources are beyond compare in the United States, they are a source of enormous economic growth and prosperity and we can not take a chance with those resources, those industries, and that economy".
