Two planes collide at New York's JFK airport

A Singapore Airlines-operated jumbo jet bound for New York's John F Kennedy International Airport was diverted to a smaller airfield instead on Thursday (Jan 4) amid a massive blizzard.

State media of Kuwait reported that all passengers were safe and were shifted to a hotel until further notification about their depature from the United States (US).

The Port Authority, which runs New York-area airports, acknowledged the problem, saying it was working to limit JFK flight arrivals until there were "gates available to handle the backlog".

The Port Authority said it assigned more staff to help travelers and would continue to offer buses to shuttle passengers back to terminals from flights waiting for a gate.

JMU Football on Practice Field for FCS Championship Game
North Dakota State University is back on top of the FCS mountain with a 17-13 win in the championship game from Toyota Stadium. To add insult to injury, a fight broke out after the play and JMU was taxed with a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The flight was one of dozens that were diverted as powerful winds and heavy snow closed runways at some of the busiest airports along the East Coast, including several worldwide long-haul flights.

"The Port Authority intends to aggressively review with its partners, the terminal operators and airlines, the process to assure that planes and passengers get to their gates during the surge of rescheduled flights that follow a severe weather event", the agency added. Some passengers reported waiting hours at baggage claim.

"Been stuck on tarmac for over 3 hours at JFK Alitalia flight 8604".

Gates that handle worldwide flights reached capacity, causing some planes to be held on the tarmac before terminal gates would be available.

Carson Palmer says goodbye as Cardinals face two big voids
Palmer's final career numbers included 46,247 passing yards, which ranks 12th all-time; he threw for 294 touchdown passes, which ranks 12th all-time.

Passengers complained of lengthy waits on planes and in the terminal since Friday afternoon.

Passengers were leaving the plane after 5 p.m. ET using outdoor stairs, according to Manoel Gerlach, a passenger aboard the plane who was travelling with his wife and toddler son.

Another passenger, meanwhile, said that passengers began calling 911 from the plane while they waited and others began "to threaten to break open the emergency exit".

According to air travel tracking service Flightradar 24, dozens of planes had the same issues after landing. Officials said the extensive delays were brought on, in part, by a backlog of delayed flights from a powerful winter storm that slammed the region Thursday. One traveler even posted a video of a fellow passenger playing violin at their gate to pass the time.
