Drastic changes proposed for SNAP program

Called "America's Harvest Box", the program would transform the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (sometimes called SNAP, or "food stamps") into a "Blue Apron-type program where you actually receive the food instead of receive the cash", White House budget director Mick Mulvaney explained.

"We are going to have to find more sources of food and more funds we can raise to buy food to fill that gap", Akright said. The rest of their benefits would be provided on electronic benefit cards as they are now. "It would require the government to select and purchase nonperishable food items, pack food boxes for millions of American homes, and then somehow deliver those food boxes across the country", Burhop said.

According to NBC News, the plan means more than 16 million households would have half of their benefits go toward the food box delivery program.

Grocery retailers are also not in favor of the proposal, with the Food Marketing Institute stating that tens of billions of dollars in SNAP benefits are spent each year at their stores, which includes Walmart, Kroger and Albertsons. Trump should trust Americans to buy the food that's right for their families - and not implement programs that may wind up costing taxpayers more than they're worth.

"I don't know where this came from, but I suspect that the folks when they were drawing it up were also watching silent movies", Concannon said. "So we're pretty excited about that". That document shows the SNAP program will be cut by $5.26 billion in the 2019 budget compared to the 2017 cost.

Javier Hernandez says West Ham's Marko Arnautovic is an 'unbelievable all-around player'
On the pitch, West Ham beat Watford 2-0 for their first win since the mid-January FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury Town. We will not be signing a player that the manager hasn't seen play, and we hope we will spend our money better.

The "Harvest Box" idea is based on an existing program known as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which utilizes local agencies and nonprofits to help distribute food boxes to "low-income elderly persons" who are at least 60-years-old.

The food bank distributed more than 48 million pounds of food to more than 450,000 people previous year.

In contrast to the government's allocated box of food, Blue Apron and other programs like it contain fresh produce and meals that people choose from a list of options.

"It would impact our store in particular...sales-wise, especially on those food stamp days", said Dorsch. Congressman Steve Cohen said the proposed changes to the SNAP program are both impractical and cruel.
