In Pyeongchang, High Winds Are No Breeze for Athletes

High winds wreaked havoc in a controversial women's slopestyle competition and forced the postponement of Mikaela Shiffrin's first gold medal bid, but they couldn't stop Canada from breezing to double gold in Pyeongchang Monday. The giant slalom will also now be Friday so the events will be back to back. "Next few days will be important", he said. "It's a consideration, absolutely".

Mikaela Shiffrin has had her 2018 Olympic debut delayed twice.

Shiffrin also harbours ambitions of success in the giant slalom and finished fifth at the Olympics four years ago.

"It is a very heavy load", said Shiffrin's coach, Mike Day. However, if the American has a bad day at the office, her rival will step forward to punish her.

Video of the slalom hill showed that it was a complete whiteout, making the decision to put off the event look wise.

Last Sunday saw the postponement of the men's downhill, the blue riband event of the programme, which has been rescheduled to take place at Jeongseon Alpine Centre on Thursday.

Each of the first two contests were postponed because of unsafe winds that exceeded 25 miles per hour and the forecast predicts more of the same on today and Wednesday.

"The No. 1 thing is safety".

"It is unfortunate that we weren't able to race today, but it is important we have a fair race for all of the athletes and today's conditions would definitely not have been fair".

"I am pretty sure that soon, we will have a race", men's race director Markus Waldner said Monday.

Shiffrin has dominated the slalom for five years, including her Olympic gold as a teenager and the past three world titles.

Whenever she does get to head down the hill through the gates, the 22-year-old American will be attempting to become the first athlete to win the slalom at two Winter Games in a row.

She is expected to be one of the superstars of the next two weeks, considered a medal favorite in slalom and giant slalom, a strong contender in the combined and a possible entrant in the other two women's individual races, the downhill and super-G.

U.S. ski star Shiffrin, who became the youngest ever Olympic slalom champion at the age of 18 in Sochi, will have to wait until Wednesday's for her first bid at gold in South Korea.
