'Threatening' package sent to embassy, Julian Assange claims

A British court has upheld a United Kingdom arrest warrant against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

After Arbuthnot's rejection, Assange's lawyers asked her to drop the arrest warrant, arguing that it was no longer in the public interest.

Assange has been staying at the Ecuadorian embassy in London for the last five years to avoid extradition to Sweden to face allegations of rape.

Senior District Judge Emma Arbuthnot, the Chief Magistrate, said in a short judgment (PDF, five pages) that "it is for the accused to prove he has reasonable cause for his failure to surrender".

A British judge rejected his lawyers' first argument that an existing arrest warrant against Assange should be withdrawn because the Swedish charges that underlie it have been shelved.

The warrant was issued for the WikiLeaks founder in 2012 after sexual abuse allegations from the Swedish government were leveled against him.

Sweden dropped its investigation a year ago, but British police are still seeking to arrest Assange for failing to surrender to a court after violating his bail terms during his unsuccessful battle against extradition.

"Therefore the warrant stands", Watkins said, calling Assange's situation "extremely simple".

Assange has refused to leave the embassy, claiming he fears being extradited to the United States over WikiLeaks' publication of secret U.S. military documents and diplomatic cables in 2010.

Still, Assange has been unable to leave the embassy in London, as he faced arrest for breaching his bail conditions in the UK.

"We hope this situation will come to an end very soon and we look forward to the decision next week", Robinson said. That investigation was dropped previous year after the prosecutor said leads had been exhausted.

There are no formal charges in against Assange in the US, though news reports previous year suggested the Justice Department was looking into it.

In December, Assange was granted Ecuadorean citizenship after applying for it months earlier.

Julian Assange won't be seeing the outside world anytime soon.
