Both Barry and Forrest received three years probation. Instead of jail, Barry will serve three years of probation and agreed to repay the city $11,000 in reimbursement fees, although it was reported she spent almost $33,000 of the government's money. Her alleged crime (a felony theft charge) was to have asked for reimbursement of travel expenses associated with an admitted affair with the chief of her security detail.

According to CBS affiliate WTVF, District Attorney Glenn Funk had some witnesses lined up who could testify to the mayor's unlawful expenditure of over $60,000 of taxpayer's money. The review found, in some instances, there were no events on Barry's calendar during hours Forrest earned overtime pay.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Forrest used a work phone to take two photos while on duty.

During Tuesday's press conference, Barry, 54, told reporters: "While my time of mayor today concludes, my unwavering love and honest affection for this wonderful city and its great people will never come to an end". Barry claims that her trips as mayor of Nashville were for business, including trips to Paris and Athens.

On Tuesday, she would be the first Nashville mayor to leave office before the expiration of their term in almost a century.

While the mayor denied violating any laws or policies, documents released by the city in the days following Barry's admission show multiple potential problems.

Before the scandal broke Barry enjoyed a 70% approval rating, according to the Tennessean newspaper. The affair reportedly began in the spring or summer of 2016.

Barry, a Democrat, became mayor in 2015. A lot of questions were raised among them being whether Sgt. Forrest's six-figure overtime pay over the three years was justified.

For Barry personally, this calamity comes at the end of a bad stretch for her and her family.
