Russian Federation calls for anti-government forces in Syria to adhere to truce

The Security Council's resolution, which passed 15-0, demands "all parties cease hostilities" for at least 30 days throughout Syria to allow the safe delivery of humanitarian aid and evacuations of the critically sick and wounded.

It calls for a 30-day ceasefire in the rebel-held area of Eastern Ghouta.

On Sunday morning, two airstrikes targeted the town of al-Shifonia, while government troops launched missiles against Harasta, Karf Badna and Jesren, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based war monitor.

The war-monitoring body says that led to fierce fighting when anti-government forces returned fire.

Al-Assad brought al-Hassan from the province of Idlib to conduct military operations in Damascus, and it appeared that the brigadier was speaking to the troops about these operations.

Russian Federation has been pressing for a negotiated withdrawal of rebel fighters and their families like the one that saw the government retake full control of Syria's second city Aleppo in December 2016.

Iran, whose Revolutionary Guards and militiamen are fighting alongside Mr Assad's forces, said it and Syria would respect the United Nations resolution.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday appealed for an immediate end to "war activities" in eastern Ghouta, an area where nearly 400,000 people have been facing a Syrian government siege since 2013, enduring perpetual food and medicine shortages.

In a statement issued after the United Nations vote, Mr Guterres said: "the resolution will be immediately implemented and sustained, particularly to ensure the immediate, safe, unimpeded and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid and services, the evacuation of the critically sick and wounded and the alleviation of the suffering of the Syrian people".

Sponsors Kuwait and Sweden amended the resolution late on Friday in a last-minute attempt to satisfy Russian Federation, dropping a demand that the ceasefire take effect in 72 hours.

Syria's former al-Qaeda affiliate is present in Eastern Ghouta and Assad's government routinely describes all of its opponents as "terrorists".

The two main rebel factions in Ghouta - Faylaq al-Rahman and Jaish al-Islam - said after the vote that they would implement the truce and facilitate aid access.
