President expects North Korea meeting in May or June

North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un discussed talks with the US at a party meeting, state media reported this morning, in his first official mention of dialogue with Washington ahead of a proposed summit with US President Donald Trump in May.

Kim's remarks on Monday break that public silence, although he did not specifically refer to a summit with Trump.

USA and North Korean intelligence officials have spoken a couple of times and even met in a third country, CNN reported.

"North Korea is striving to improve ties with the South and the United States to end its status as a pariah country and establish itself as a normal state".

"And as I said, the North Korea and South Korea situation, which complicates it - the deal that we have with South Korea, I think, is going to be - I think it's going to be a very fair deal".

Trump's comments have turned the event into a fresh source of tension between the United States and its southern neighbors. Some give them 20 days to transit the country on their way to the US border with the stated goal of applying for asylum.

He added that previous presidents should have held such talks.

North Korea has expressed its readiness to address the issue, which Kim himself said during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing in March, "can be resolved if South Korea and the USA respond to our efforts with goodwill" and "take progressive and synchronized steps towards its achievement".

After yesterday's announcement the Asian country were willing to get rid of their nuclear weapons, Trump said on Twitter: "For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility".

On several occasions, Trump has called Kim "little rocket man" and claimed that the U.S.' nuclear "button" is "much bigger" than North Korea's.

All of this appears designed to create the right environment for the inter-Korean summit to be held on April 27 in the "peace village" on the border between the North and South, and then Kim's summit with Trump the following month.
