Russian Federation warns USA against Syria strike

President Donald Trump said Monday he will decide "probably by the end of today" on a USA response to the apparent chemical weapons attack on Syrian civilians. Both Russia and Syria are now inviting inspectors from the global chemical weapons watchdog into the country to investigate.

Mr Trump did not give a time frame for any retaliatory action, but said the U.S. could not stand by as such atrocities take place because "we are able to stop it".

"He may. And if he does, it's gonna be very tough". He added, "Everybody's gonna pay a price. He will, everybody will".

Wallstrom added "these are civilians who have once more been attacked and killed in this way - this is simply unacceptable and we need to keep up the pressure on Russian Federation". A US Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, is in the Mediterranean.

Potential preparations for a military ramp-up in Syria come just over a week after Trump signalled he wants to end US involvement in the Middle Eastern country.

"The monster who was responsible for these attacks has no conscience to be shocked by pictures of dead children", Haley said, explaining that she wouldn't show photos of the victims as she had after a chemical attack in April 2017 that led to USA strikes on Syria. "I have reached a point in which I am expressing a concern about worldwide security", he told the council. "Nothing's off the table", he said after condemning Saturday's suspected use of toxic gas.

"But we can't let atrocities like we all witnessed ... we can't let that happen in our world ... especially when we're able to because of the power of the United States, the power of our country, we're able to stop it", Trump said.

Israel gave the United States advance notice, the official said.

Russian Federation on Tuesday vetoed a US -drafted United Nations Security Council resolution to set up an expert body that would assign blame for chemical attacks in Syria. The draft resolution, obtained by The Associated Press, was circulated ahead of an emergency Security Council meeting.

Russia's claim came hours after the Pentagon denied Syrian media reports that the USA conducted the airstrikes in Syria. A group that monitors Syria's civil war said the airstrikes killed 14 people, including Iranians active in Syria.

The Prime Minister said that if confirmed as a chemical weapons attack, it would be "yet another example of the Assad regime's brutality and brazen disregard for its own people".

President Trump canceled plans Tuesday for his first trip to South America, in another sign that he is preparing to order an imminent military strike against Syria over its deadly chemical weapons attack against civilians in a rebel-held suburb of Damascus.

Trump and Macron have agreed to coordinate a "strong, joint response" to the attack.

Bloomberg View: Expect Trump to Strike Syrian Forces Again, With the Same Result - "If the past is prelude, we should expect a USA strike sometime soon against Syrian airfields".

Last year, Washington bombed a Syrian government air base after a chemical weapons attack. The U.S. military has deployed about 2,000 troops to advise and support local militias battling the Islamic State. They include sea-launched cruise missiles aboard ships within range of Syria.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders offered no new indications of how the United States plans to respond to the suspected chemical attack in Syria.

The president's comments came after Moscow's ambassador to the United Nations warned of the potential consequences to Western intervention in Syria. Israel does not typically comment on its operations in Syria, and it is unclear whether the missile attack was linked to the suspected use of chemical weapons.

The developments come as Trump has declared his intent to withdraw US troops from Syria in the coming months despite resistance from many of his advisers. It's armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, the weapon of choice in a USA attack one year ago on an airfield in Syria following an alleged sarin gas attack on civilians. White House advisers said at the time that images of hurt children helped spur the president to launch that airstrike, and television new shows on Sunday aired similar depictions of suffering young Syrians.
