The news comes days before Solo: A Star Wars Story, a standalone film documenting the rise of the Star Wars universe's beloved smuggler, is primed to arrive in theaters.

The Han Solo origin film began its global run with a dismal $65 million this weekend. It ultimately earned $523 million overseas. Solo, which opens Friday, is the second movie to be spun from the main Star Wars line — Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first — but it is the first to focus on a particular character. It got a good CinemaScore (A-minus). With the rejiggered production, the budget soared well past $250 million.

The Memorial Day weekend, which has in recent years struggled to get audiences to leave their BBQs and head to the movies, could have also played a factor. Even with Avengers: Infinity War's surprise release date shift, from early May to late April, it's still kicking on the box office charts.

Amazon's Alexa recorded private conversation and sent it to random contact
For what it's worth, Danielle told ABC that there were no audible warnings from Alexa that it (she?) was doing anything. Danielle explained her whole house was wired with Amazon devices, something not uncommon for fans of the Alexa units.

The gambit may have hurt both releases. The movie sold $14.1 million in Thursday preview ticket sales, which is a record for the Thursday before Memorial Day Weekend.

But there were also questions beyond the effect the calendar had on "Solo".

Our review of Solo describes the movie as "uninspired and visually tiresome", albeit with intriguing potential for a sequel.

Fans were skeptical of Ehrenreich and uncertain about the dismissal of Lord and Miller (the popular filmmaking duo behind "21 Jump Street" and "The Lego Movie").

The Star Wars franchise has experienced a renaissance at the hands of Disney. And as per Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, 70 percent of the final film was shot (and reshot) by Howard.

For now, Disney is playing it safe by keeping the Star Wars tradition going. "Solo looks to restore this holiday frame to its former glory and its place as one of the most important weekends of the year and the all-important summer movie season". It's a much more competitive time at multiplexes than December, which has been the home for "Star Wars" movies since "The Force Awakens". That's plenty of breathing space. Furthermore, according to past reports, Disney is also looking at potential spinoffs for Jabba the Hutt and Yoda.
