"We'd like to apologize for this mistake", Egan said.

Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, said this did not affect past posts.

The bug apparently happened because Facebook was building a new "featured items" option that highlights content on profiles. During that time, the privacy settings on some users' posts were changed to public without any warning.

It was unclear if users could have done anything to their settings to prevent being affected by the bug the company revealed on Thursday. It will also show affected users a notification with an explanation and apology, and urge them to review any posts they made during the time period when the bug was active.

Facebook admitted that the posts of over 14 million users who thought they were sharing privately with their friends may have actually been shared publicly because of a software bug during the month of May 2018. This means any posts that they made could be read by anyone regardless of their default setting. People could have changed the individual audience setting on posts, but would have had to notice the setting was different from what they'd chosen.

Facebook, which said it discovered the bug, has not yet shared details about who may have accessed the exposed data, or how that access may have occurred. For a bug to break that system for millions of users is yet another major problem Facebook is going to have to deal with.
