For a number of years, Google has marketed Android tablets under its own branding, having started with the Asus-manufactured Nexus 7 around the middle of 2012.

This goes a long way towards explaining how Google's engineers might have overlooked the category while updating the website. And by normal we mean displaying tablets that have been around for years and not anything new like the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 or the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet.

Google never really had any love for tablets if you think hard about it. So, what's next? My money is on Chrome OS tablets with Android apps. In addition to tablets, the website also provides information about Telephones, Wear, Android TV and Enterprise.

While Google will not be selling any more of its tablets, Samsung tablets still exist. If you can't see that option, you'll need to visit chrome://flags, search for "Enable app banners", choose "Enable" from the drop-down menu and then restart your browser. Chrome OS and Chromebooks are being groomed to do what Android tablets have not been able to in terms of productivity and usability. However, none of the tablets Google promotes on the website are even available anymore.

Google removed its Tablets category from its Android page earlier today. Google may be seeing the writing on the wall and has quietly removed the "Tablets" heading from its Android website. The declining interest in Android tablets has been highlighted in a report by Digitimes Research which claimed that 33 million tablets were shipped in the first quarter of 2018.

We don't know what Google is planning to do or whether we will ever see a revolutionary Android tablet from a major brand.
