At least 28 people were killed in an air strike late on Thursday which hit an ice factory near a village still controlled by the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria's eastern province of Deir Ezzor, according to an activist group.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a United Kingdom -based monitor with ties to the Syrian opposition, reported that "at least 54" people were killed in USA -led coalition airstrikes targeting ISIS near an ice factory at the Muzan junction, just east of Al-Soussa in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor.

It was not immediately clear if the raid was carried out by an Iraqi plane or by one of the US-led coalition fighting IS, which was not immediately available for comment. He added in his email to the news agency that the report of civilian casualties had been forwarded to the "Civilian Casualty Cell for further assessment".

On April 19, the Iraqi Air Force conducted strikes against Islamic State forces near the Syrian-Iraqi border, in coordination with the Syrian government in Damascus.

The Observatory said at least 30 Iraqi fighters were killed in the strike near the town of Albu Kamal on the Syria Iraq border. In Syria it operates in support of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of militias that includes Kurds.

Reuters could not independently verify the reports.

The area around al-Soussa, on the eastern bank of the Euphrates river, is still under the control of IS, which still retains pockets of territory near the border with Iraq.
